Weight capacity is the maximum load a piece of safety equipment — a shower chair, transfer bench, grab bar, raised toilet seat, or bed rail — is rated to support safely. It's one of the most important specifications to check before buying.
Why it matters
Using equipment at or beyond its rated capacity is dangerous: frames can flex, legs can splay, and a product can fail at the worst possible moment. Always choose a rating comfortably above the user's body weight, not just equal to it, to leave a margin of safety.
Typical ranges
- Standard shower chairs and benches: 300–350 lb
- Heavy-duty / bariatric models: 500 lb and up
- Grab bars: 500 lb when properly anchored into wall studs
- Bed rails: commonly 300–380 lb
A note on grab bars
A grab bar's high weight rating only holds if it's mounted into studs or solid blocking. The same bar screwed into drywall alone will not support anywhere near its rated capacity. See our best grab bars guide.
