Grab Bar

A grab bar is a sturdy, wall-mounted handle that gives a person a stable handhold to steady themselves, transfer, or catch a fall. In senior home safety, grab bars are most often installed in the bathroom — the room where falls are most common.

Two types, very different uses

• Screw-mounted (weight-bearing): Bolted into wall studs or solid blocking, these support a person's full body weight (typically rated to 500 lb) and can actually catch a fall. This is the type to use for real safety.
• Suction-mounted: Attach with suction cups to smooth tile. They provide light balance support only and must never be relied on to stop a fall.

Where to install them

• At the shower or tub entry — for stepping in and out.
• Inside the shower — for support while standing and washing.
• Beside the toilet — for the sit-to-stand motion.

Safe installation
