Fall Detection

Fall detection is a feature in some medical alert systems that uses motion sensors to automatically detect a sudden fall and place an emergency call — without the wearer needing to press the help button.

Why it matters

In a serious fall, a person may be unconscious, disoriented, or unable to reach the button. Automatic fall detection provides a safety net for exactly these situations, summoning a monitoring center or emergency contact on the wearer's behalf.

What to know before relying on it

• It's a backup, not a replacement. No fall-detection system catches every fall, and some everyday motions can trigger false alarms. It works best alongside, not instead of, a manual help button.
• It usually costs extra. Most providers charge a small additional monthly fee for fall detection.
• Wear consistency is key. The feature only helps if the device is actually worn — including in the bathroom, where many falls happen.
