A personal emergency response system (PERS) — commonly called a medical alert system — is a device that lets a senior call for help at the press of a button. It typically pairs a wearable pendant or wristband with a base unit or cellular connection that contacts a 24/7 monitoring center or designated contacts.
How it works
When the button is pressed (or a fall is detected automatically), the system opens a two-way voice link to a monitoring operator, who assesses the situation and dispatches help — a family member, neighbor, or emergency services. In-home units use a base station; mobile units use cellular and GPS so help can find the wearer away from home.
Who benefits most
A PERS is valuable for seniors living alone or at risk of falls, giving both the wearer and their family peace of mind. Many systems add automatic fall detection, which calls for help even if the person can't press the button. See our best medical alert systems roundup and our guide to choosing a medical alert system.
