There is a common mistake in this category, which is buying the highest magnification available. Strong magnification shrinks the field of view, so a 10X lens shows a word or two at a time and is useless for reading. What it is genuinely good at is detailed work on a small object with both hands free.
Why it works for seniors
Hands-free is the entire reason to choose a lamp over a handheld lens. Splinter removal, needle threading, pill splitting and small repairs all need two hands, and holding a magnifier consumes one of them.
The integrated light matters as much as the lens. Ageing eyes typically need considerably more light, and a handheld lens held over a page puts its own shadow on the target. Lighting the subject from the lens itself removes that problem.
A glass lens holds up. Acrylic lenses scratch with cleaning and go hazy over a couple of years, which is a slow degradation the user often does not notice until the aid has stopped helping.
